Tip of the Month (#1)
The benefits of fluids during exercise:
Fluid replacement during vigorous exercise directly offsets the negative effects of dehydration.
Athletes taking part in physical exercise, especially in the heat, may become dehydrated by as much as 2-6% of their own bodyweight. It is this fact that makes it so important to continually re-hydrate the body. Many atheletes do not realise the effects of dehydration setting in until its too late as thirst is not a sensitive indicator of dehydration.
There are 4 main indicators of dehydration and hyperhydration that you can be aware of to make sure you find a good healthy balance:
- changes in bodyweight
- change in skin colour
- change in volume of urination
- and changes in frequency of urination
If you can, try exercising with a sports drink and keep hydrated!
